The right hotel booking window in Japan depends on season, city and room type. A business hotel in Osaka on a normal weekday does not behave like a small ryokan with private baths during cherry blossom season.
A practical 2026 booking model
Editorial booking ranges based on official demand and seasonality: - 9 to 12 months ahead for small premium ryokan and top peak-season stays - 6 to 9 months ahead for central Kyoto in peak season - 4 to 6 months ahead for Tokyo and Osaka in stronger travel periods - 3 to 6 months ahead for family rooms and larger rooms - 1 to 3 months ahead can still work for ordinary city hotels in non-peak weeks

Personal advice is worth it if you are traveling in peak seasons, deciding between Kyoto and Osaka as your base, or need family rooms, ryokan or other limited-inventory stays.
