Decide what you are really buying
A ryokan with onsen is usually a mix of three things: a traditional stay, a meal experience and access to bathing. JNTO notes that ryokan are usually priced per person and often include meals, which means you are buying a rhythm, not just a room.
Shared bath, private bath or in-room bath
Choose shared bathing for the most traditional experience. Choose a reservable private bath if you want more privacy or easier first-time comfort. Choose an in-room bath if privacy is a core priority and budget matters less.
JNTO’s onsen etiquette guidance is clear: wash before entering, keep towels and hair out of the water, and check tattoo rules in advance.
Where a ryokan stay works best
One night is often enough on a first trip. Two nights make sense if rest and the stay itself are major goals.
When to get personal help
Personal advice is worth it if you are choosing between shared and private bathing, have tattoos or dietary needs, or want to place one ryokan night in the right part of the route.
